EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
In Charlevoix, education is at the heart of our priorities!
Quebec’s educational system has four levels in French and in English: primary school which includes preschool, secondary school, college and university. The system is composed mainly of public institutions but there are also private schools at the preschool, primary, secondary and college levels.
Public education is free, from preschool to college, for Quebec residents and for children of foreign workers who have work permits. Cost of education in the private sector goes from $1,500 to $3,500 a year.
Education is mandatory for all children from six to sixteen and school starts at the end of August or at the beginning of September and usually ends on June 24 for primary schools and in late May for college and university students.
Language taught to children of foreign workers
Foreign workers who work here temporarily can send their children to French- or English-language schools for the duration of their contract. Children registered in the French public schools who have little knowledge of the French language can take free classes to facilitate their integration to regular schools.
