
For many years, Canada has signed free trade agreements with various countries in the Americas to increase the growth of commercial exchanges and investments between the concerned parties.
- ALE, a free trade agreement between Canada and the United States, launched in 1989, to eliminate a majority of customs tariff between the two countries.
- NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico, was launched in 1994. This agreement gives Quebec access to a marketplace of more than 440 million consumers and a gross domestic product more than $15 US billion dollars.
- FTAA, the Free Trade Area of the Americas, promises to liberalise even more exchanges between the 34 countries of the two Americas. This vast region represents a market of nearly 900 million inhabitants with a GDP of more than $19 US billion dollars.
